If you look into the history of this game, you will find that it traces
back to the earlier forms of rugby football and association football.

developed with several variations in the rugby football, and the changes
in the rule were formulated by Walter Camp who is actually referred to
as the 'Father of American Football'.
However, the professional
football was not introduced until 1892 and the Ohio League was formed in
1903 which is the foremost Professional 'league' and the American
Professional Football Association came into existence into 1920 and the
name was changed to the National Football league or NFL after some
years.
The field used for playing the game should necessarily be
360 by 160 feet and the scoring area in this game is called the end
zone. This game commences with the toss of a coin which determines which
team gets the choice of decision. The game is split into four 15-minute
quarters with an intermission time of 12 minutes after the second
quarter is over.
Players can advance the ball in two different
ways wherein the first one is that they can run with the ball which is
also called as rushing and secondly they can throw or pass the ball to
the teammate. American football has grown to be a major game not only in
